What happens to your data after death?

Social networks and the predominance of digital technology in our daily lives raise questions in the event of death. Predicting the fate of our post-mortem data will become crucial to preserving our loved ones and ensuring the transmission of our digital assets. To answer these questions, the digital safe is an effective solution.

The virtual existence post-mortem

According to a study conducted by the CNIL in 2014, about 1% of existing Facebook profiles belong to deceased individuals. Indeed, if nothing is done by the heirs, the digital presence survives after physical death. An account on a social network or messaging service is strictly private. Therefore, it is subject to confidentiality obligations. This is why, in the absence of a provision to this effect, heirs do not have free access to it. The protection of personal data is therefore a major issue that Internet users are only beginning to realize. Being proactive in organizing your digital legacy will save your heirs a lot of hassle. You will be able to decide in complete security what to do with your personal information online.

The provisions of the legislation

The text of October 7, 2016 amends the original law of January 6, 1978, known as the "Data Protection Act." Providing a right to digital death, this new article facilitates the transmission of personal data. Thus, everyone can decide to entrust the management of these elements to a third party whose probity will be certified by the National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties. If the deceased person has not left any specific instructions, the heirs will be able to request to benefit from the inherent attributions of the deceased in order to easily access the latter's various accounts. The 2016 law also provides that the next of kin should have the information necessary to complete the estate. They can also benefit from all digital assets that can be assimilated to family memories.

The advantages of the digital safe

Our ever-growing presence on the Internet has led to the emergence and development of a new kind of service: the digital safe. It offers users the protection of their personal data and the gathering of necessary information after death. Indeed, if for example the deceased had Bitcoins or any other virtual currency, having the security key is imperative to have access to the money available on the account. For an optimal protection of your personal data, you can store in these new generation safes your different identifiers, your passwords and other sensitive information. This highly secure storage process is reliable and lasts over time. At a time when it has never been so easy to post on community networks, knowing that the information you post will be in good hands is a guarantee of security and serenity*.* The offer is currently in its infancy and it is likely that this market will experience strong growth in the coming years.
